Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit Serbia, Poland and Uzbekistan from June 17 to 22. Serbia is President Xi's first stop and also an important investment destination for Chinese companies.
China and Serbia entered into a strategic partnership agreement in 2009. Growing Chinese investment in Serbia is improving the country's infrastructure.
"We have a high-speed railway project from Belgrade to Budapest, an autoway connecting Montenegro to Serbia and etc.. Chinese investment in Serbia totals 2.2 to 2.5 billion euros. We hope more contracts can be signed in the months after President Xi's visit," said Zorana Mihajlovic Deputy PM for construction, traffic and infrastructure.
Mihajlovic says Chinese investment will enhance Serbia's strategic position and Serbia is also willing to promote the cooperation framework between China and 16 central eastern European countries.
"We are delighted that China chooses Serbia as its partner, which turns out to be the most important partner in Western Balkan Region. Most Chinese investment in Western Balkan ended in Serbia, which proves that Serbia is the hub of China-Central Eastern Europe cooperation framework and also an important country for infrastructure investment," she said.
Xi Jinping is the first Chinese President to visit the country in more than 30 years. His visit will strengthen economic ties between China and Serbia.
"Serbia is an old friend of Chinese people. This visit is very important for us. We hope it can enhance our bilateral relationship. Serbia is an open country. We are willing to cooperate with everyone, especially with Chinese partners who have established a long friendship with us," she said.
