ROADSHOW INVEST IN PERU: IT IS POSSIBLE

Brief:Peru investment Roadshow in Asia was successfully held in Beijing and Shanghai.
The first stage of Proinversión’s (Private Investment Promotion Agency of Peru) Roadshow in Asia has had a very positive response, generating much interest from private investors and companies as well as international and national press. With the first event having been held this Monday the 8th of April in Beijing, and the second the following day on Tuesday the 9th of April in Shanghai, both occasions were highly welcomed by the participants and much interest was felt for the projects that were discussed, and the opportunities for direct investment in Peru.

The opening event of the Roadshow took place in the well-known Diaoyutai State Guesthouse, the famous complex the Chinese Government lends to visiting dignitaries, where President Ollanta Humala gave a speech in front of 30 specially selected members of the most important companies in China. Mr Humala gave an insightful opening speech on China’s fruitful and historic relationship with Peru, saying that “As of 2011, China has become Peru’s top commercial partner and Peru hopes it will stay this way”.
 
The Executive Director of Proinversion, Javier Illescas discussed in his speech the opportunities for investment in the fields of transport, sanitation, energy and hydraulics. Illescas underlined that “Peru treats a national investor in the same way as a foreign investor, and this Roadshow in China and the rest of Asia is a demonstration of our commitment with responsible foreign investment”.
 
After the presentations in the morning, one to one meetings took place between Chinese businessmen and members of the Peruvian delegation. Wang Yuhnag, Vicepresident of China CAMC Engineering said “the meeting was very positive and reaffirms the interest China has in Peru, since it is a country rich in resources such as agriculture, and mining…and that as members of APEC, both countries should further enhance their economic collaboration”.

The event in Shanghai was also hugely successful since it was held in a more public setting with over 150 guests in the modern Westin Hotel, including some of the most important businessmen of the city. Further to a speech by President Humala, Ministers Carlos Paredes and Jorge Merino also gave speeches on the projects of their sectors. Mr Illescas stressed the underlying aspects tied to economic growth in Peru during recent years as well as the exact rules that take place when licensing investment projects. “Peru has achieved much progress in regulation when granting international concessions, through competitive tenders which finalize in contracts that integrate construction, operation and maintenance”.

Upon the end of the tour in China, the Ambassador of Peru in China, Gonzalo Gutierrez, said that “at the present the balance of direct Chinese investments in Peru has reached around 6 thousand million dollars, which this type of tour will hopefully help to increase to 8 thousand million and to contribute to encourage more investment projects”.
