Chinese educators to invest in Victor Harbor for campus opportunities
2018-10-25
The purchase of four blocks of land on Flinders Parade will pave the way for greater opportunities for Chinese educators and students.

John van Diermen and Feng Liang are business partners in Australian Postcards Pty Ltd and have purchased the 1400 square metres for more than $800,000 and plan to establish a long term tourism and education business in Victor Harbor.

It is aimed at the Chinese market and Feng Liang has utilised relationships built over many years to attract education leaders to Victor Harbor to share her and John’s vision.

Ray Wang represents Yingbo Educational International, which has six branches with 4000 students, 120 kilometres from Shanghai, Qing Yang is Principal of Starbug, which is a group of 10 schools, mostly in Shanghai and Ni Cheng is from New Star English in South China and all toured the Fleurieu Peninsula looking at partnership schools and TAFE.

Ms Liang and Mr van Diermen live on Hindmarsh Island and purchased the Flinders Parade property to develop a four storey commercial and accommodation complex.

“There will be classrooms and accommodation for Chinese students and there will be benefits for the local economy, as we promote tourism and education,” Mr van Diermen said.

Ms Liang said the idea was to start with school camps.

“I told them not to go to Sydney, but come here and we envisage both economic, cultural and social benefits for the local community.

“We are also interested in helping local attractions such as the Visitor Information Centre and Horse Tram to be more Chinese friendly with translating signs and brochures,” Ms Liang said.

The short term school camps will be tailored to encourage Chinese students with the support of their parents to consider secondary and tertiary studies in Victor Harbor.

The visiting Chinese principals were impressed with Victor Harbor.

The tourism and education vision of Australian Postcards Pty Ltd has impressed the Chinese principals.

Mr Wang, Mr Yang and Mr Cheng said they want to set up campuses in Victor Harbor.

“We plan to bring students in the northern summer of 2019, initially 30 to 40 students for a period of a month, but once the building is finished at Flinders Parade we will have many students wanting to come here for further study,” Mr Wang said.

Mr Yang said we would set up a campus in Victor Harbor, as he has done in the United States the UK and Canada.

“We need to establish a partner school and then begin with summer school and then look longer term for secondary and tertiary study,” Mr Yang said.

“Victor Harbor is peaceful, accessible and has a community, family setting with clean air, the sea and natural beauty.”

Mr van Diermen said Australian Postcards Pty Ltd has made a long term commitment to the Fleurieu Peninsula and the Victor Harbor community in particular.

“The Australian members of the business will be residing permanently in Victor Harbor once the development on 9-12 Flinders Parade has been completed,” Mr van Diermen said.

“We intend and encourage our Chinese tourists/students to participate in local attractions as much as possible and to spend their money in local shops and businesses. Hosting a number of English College principals from China has been a success and the camps will be conducted during the Chinese school holidays, which are in July/August and January/February.”

The building project on Flinders Parade is hoped to be finished by the end of 2019.
