INVESTMENT Fiji (IF) chief executive officer Godo Muller-Teut says Chinese investments in Fiji have increased steadily over the years.

"Since 2011, a total of 289 projects were registered by Chinese citizens or companies at a proposed cumulative investment value of $1.10 billion," he said.

Mr Muller-Teut was addressing a 21-member Chinese delegation during a presentation at the Inaugural Fiji-China Business Exchange Summit and High-level Trade and Investment Seminar in Suva on Tuesday.

His remarks supported what Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism Faiyaz Koya had said earlier in his welcome address; "Such has been the confidence of Chinese investors in the Fijian economy in the past few years that China currently is our biggest source of direct foreign investments."

The IF chief said this investment trend remained steady with the number of projects registered annually increasing from 25 in 2011 and 28 in 2012 to 149 in 2015 at a proposed investment value of $271million.

Mr Muller-Teut however noted that a major portion of Chinese investors still chose sectors that resulted in limited foreign direct investment and those that generated low levels of domestic employment.

He said it was imperative that the Chinese invested in manufacturing, tourism etc.
