Rich Chinese emigrating as investors

Brief:Countries accepting Chinese immigrants expect that money brought in through purchases of real estate, stock investments and other activities will stimulate their economies and create jobs.
An increasingly large number of Chinese have been emigrating to other countries under “investment immigrant” programs in which permanent resident status is granted to foreign nationals investing a certain level of money in the countries.

There are many instances where wealthy Chinese, who have increased in number due to China’s economic growth, emigrate seeking better living conditions in other countries.

Many Western nations that accept such Chinese immigrants expect the inflow of money will lead to the revitalization of their economies.

Under the program, governments set the amount of money to be invested in advance and give permanent resident status and other benefits to foreign nationals who pass the criteria. Countries that have introduced such programs include the United States, Britain , Greece and Australia.

Countries accepting them expect that money brought in through purchases of real estate, stock investments and other activities will stimulate their economies and create jobs.

In mid-December, an event to explain emigration to the United States was held in Beijing and the venue was packed by nearly 100 attendees.

In Beijing, similar events to explain emigration to other countries have been held almost every week. A 40-year-old company executive attending the event said, “I want to enjoy living overseas.”

The investment immigrant programs are used by wealthy Chinese who want to emigrate to other countries. The number of Chinese nationals who obtained U.S. permanent resident visas in 2013 was 6,895, a 19-fold increase from five years ago.

One of the reasons Chinese people wish to emigrate is China’s environmental problems, which have been worsening significantly.

There are many Chinese who emigrate to other countries because they want unpolluted air and safe food. Some men also let their wives and children live overseas while continuing to do business in China.

Also, a sizable number of Chinese wish to raise their children in advantageous educational circumstances in industrialized countries, benefiting from high-level English language education.

For super-rich Chinese who have built assets as entrepreneurs, obtaining permanent residence in other countries has become a symbol of their success in some cases.
