Chinese Premier Li Keqiang will be in
Britain beginning today to enhance economic ties. China hopes the trip will also help mend ties between the two countries.
The Chinese foreign ministry said on Thursday that Li will meet British Prime Minister David Cameron as well as Queen Elizabeth.
Li is expected to agree to interbank cooperation so a settlement service for the Chinese yuan can begin in London. Britain aims to make the capital a trading center for the Chinese currency.
The Chinese premier will likely also approve deals for Chinese firms to invest in high-speed railway systems and nuclear power plant construction in the UK.
Vice Minister of Commerce Gao Yan told reporters on Thursday that cooperation in the economic field acts as a weight to stabilize ties with Britain, and is an important force for 2 countries to work together.
China apparently aims to avert such criticism by highlighting economic cooperation during the premier's visit.
