Rice production technologies introduced by Chinese technicians in the Lower Limpopo irrigation area, in Mozambique, will make it possible to increase yield per hectare from 2 tons to at least 6 tons, according to farmers working in the region.
According to daily newspaper Notícias the farmers that were contacted, although the current campaign has not finished, said they expected per hectare yield to rise three-fold compared to the two tons achieved with traditional production methods.
With the introduction of new techniques, Notícias said, there was also a significant drop in the cost of rice production, which previously stood at 50,000 meticals per hectare, down to 32,000 meticals.
The involvement of farmers in this experiment, according to information provided by Armando Ussivane, the chairman of the state-run Lower Limpopo Irrigation Area (Regadio do Baixo Limpopo – RBL), followed a public-private partnership (PPP) set up after a two-way agreement was signed by the Chinese and Mozambican governments in April 2007.
The governments of the Chinese province of Hubei and Mozambican province of Gaza signed a memorandum of understanding, which initially provided 300 hectares of land to Chinese company Liafeng Overseas Agriculture Development Co Limited.
Three years later the Chinese had identified high yield rice varieties and had yields of between 8 and 10 tone per hectare. Meanwhile the Hubei Lianfeng Overseas Agriculture Development Co. was replaced by the China Wanbao Oil & Grain Co.
In December 2012 an exploration contract for 20,000 hectares was finally signed by Regadio do Baixo Limpopo and the China Wanbao Oil & Grain Co. (macauhub/MZ/CN)
