Brief Introduction of the China-LAC Business Summit

Brief:China-Latin America Business Summit aims to focus on the key issues to the interest of China-Latin America business circles, with a broader prospect of international economic & trade development trend.
As the first promotion mechanism and platform of economic & trade cooperation between China and Latin America & the Caribbean, the China-LAC Business Summit was commenced by the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) in November, 2007. On November 5, 2008, the Chinese Government issued China’s Policy Paper on Latin America and the Caribbean, in which the China-LAC Business Summit was officially included as the key mechanism to drive forward the development of China-LAC business relations.

China-LAC Business Summit aims to focus on the key issues to the interest of China-LAC business circles, with a broader prospect of international economic & trade development trend. Elite speakers including senior political leaders, renowned experts, representatives from international organizations and financial institutions, together with entrepreneurs from China and LAC countries, are invited to discuss on China-LAC trade & investment policies and market opportunities in panel sessions. Besides, under the umbrella of the summit, there are also LAC National & Regional Exhibitions, Roundtable Meeting of China-LAC Trade Promotion Organizations and one-on-one business matchmaking meetings. All previous summits gained great supports from both political and business circles of China and LAC countries, with active participation of over 600 attendees from more than 20 LAC countries and regions each year. As years went by, the China-LAC Business Summit has been continuously expanding with greater influence.

The first three China-LAC Business Summits were convened respectively in Santiago, Chile, Harbin, China and Bogotá, Colombia, with the participation of H.E. Ms. Michelle Bachelet Jeria, the then-President of Chile, H.E. Mr. Álvaro Uribe Vélez, the then-President of Colombia, H.E. Mr. Zhou Tienong, Vice Chairman of the National People’s Congress Standing Committee of China, H.E. Mr. Abulaiti Abudurexiti, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and H.E. Mr. Li Meng, former Vice Chairman of the National Committee of CPPCC.

The 4th China-LAC Summit co-hosted by CCPIT, the People’s Bank of China (PBC), Sichuan Provincial Government and Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) was held in the city of Chengdu, Sichuan Province, October 21 to 22, 2010. H.E. Mr. Bai Lichen, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of CPPCC delivered the keynote speech at the opening ceremony. Senior government officials from China and LAC countries and regions, representatives from international organizations and multilateral development financial institutions such as the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America the Caribbean (ECLA) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), among over 400 LAC entrepreneurs from 34 countries and regions such as Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, Costa Rica, etc., together with over 600 Chinese entrepreneurs from more than 20 provinces participated in the summit.

The 5th China-LAC Business Summit co-hosted by CCPIT, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and principal chambers of commerce of Perú was held in Lima, capital city of Perú, November 21 to 22, 2011. Over 300 Chinese entrepreneurs from more than 20 provinces including Beijing, Tianjin, Sichuan, Heilongjiang, Jilin, etc. and over 600 entrepreneurs from 15 LAC countries including Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Guatemala, etc. attended the summit under the theme of “Inclusive Growth: New Chapter for China-Latin America Partnership” and participated in various of business activities such as the 5th Roundtable of China-LAC Trade Promotion Organizations, Peru Business Opportunities Seminar, business match-making meetings, LAC National & Regional Exhibitions and China Trade Fair. H.E. Mr. Ollanta Humala, President of Peru and H.E. Mr. Hua Jianmin, Vice Chairman of NPC Standing Committee of China attended the opening ceremony and delivered keynote speeches. Among the distinguished guests there were also IDB President Luis Alberto Moreno, CAF President Enrique Garcia, Costa Rican Minister of Foreign Trade Anabel Gonzalez, Vice President of Chilean Foreign Investment Committee Matias Mori, President of Peruvian Council of Ministers Salomon Lerner Ghitis and a few other Peruvian Ministers.

The 6th China-LAC Business Summit co-hosted by China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), the People’s Bank of China (PBC), Hangzhou Municipal Government and Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) convened in Hangzhou on October 17-18. Ablet Abdurishit, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Wan Jifei, Chairman of CCPIT, Li Chao, Deputy Administrator of State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE), Huang Kunming, Hangzhou Party Secretary, Shao Zhanwei, Mayor of Hangzhou, Luis Alberto Moreno, President of IDB and Alicia Bárcena, Executive Director of Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), together with senior government officials of economic departments from different LAC countries, attended and addressed the summit. Over 400 foreign entrepreneurs from 30 countries and regions, joined with nearly 800 Chinese entrepreneurs from 26 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions gathered in the summit under the theme of “Trade and Investment Transformation, Greater Development” and held discussions on issues including upgrading bilateral investment, adding value to bilateral trade, financial services and the real economy, smart cities, trade in services, natural resources and SMEs’ development, etc. Different kinds of business activities were conducted during the summit as well, including the Roundtable Conference for China and LAC Trade Promotion Organizations, the China-LAC Business Exhibition, and over 1000 one-on-one business match-making meetings as well as local factory visits. Besides, China-Latin America Business Council was officially launched by CCPIT Chairman Wan Jifei at the occasion of the summit, witnessed by Vice Chairman Ablet Abdurishit, senior government officials and leaders of commercial chambers as well as nearly 1,000 entrepreneurs from home and abroad.
